The golden calf incident describes our tendency to turn away from God. While it records a real event that happened, it also describes what happens in our lives today. When we turn away from God, we are showing impatience with his plan and unbelief in his promise. But we have a mediator, one who stands in the gap between our condemning sin and God's just wrath. Jesus pleads for us, appealing to God's mercy, God's glory, and ultimately, to Jesus' own sacrifice of himself on the cross to atone for our sins.
